Start with the battery

Nine times out of ten, no power means a battery issue. Check this first.

• Is it charged? Put it on charge and see if the charger shows it taking power. A flat pack is the most common cause by far.
• Is it seated properly? Make sure the battery is fully home and any catch or lock is engaged. A pack that has worked loose loses connection.
• Is the main connector clean and tight? Unplug and replug the main battery connector. Look for dirt, corrosion or a pin that has backed out.
• Removable battery? Try removing it and refitting it. A reseat often restores a lost connection.

Check the key switch and power button

Simple but easily missed. Make sure the key switch is fully on, and that you are turning the bike on in the correct sequence for your model. Try the key in both positions and listen for the dash waking up. A worn or wet key switch can stop the bike powering up, and wiggling it gently while turning sometimes reveals a dodgy switch.

Look at the connectors

Vibration and water are the enemies of electrical connections. If the battery is good and the switch is on, suspect a connector.

• Check the main connectors between battery, controller and motor are clean and fully clicked together.
• Look for any connector that has come loose, especially after a hard ride or a crash.
• Check for corrosion or green crud on the pins, which stops the current flowing.
• After a wet ride, damp connectors can cut power. Dry them out and try again.

Reseating connectors fixes a surprising number of dead bikes. Be gentle and never force a connector the wrong way.

Did it get wet?

Water is a common cause of a Sur-Ron cutting out or refusing to start, especially after a deep puddle or a jet wash. Often it clears once everything dries out. Get the bike somewhere warm and dry, leave it overnight, dry the connectors, and try again in the morning. It cuts out rather than dead

If the bike powers up but cuts out under load or after a few minutes, the causes are a bit different.

• Low battery. A nearly flat pack can power the dash but cut out under throttle. Charge it.
• Overheating. Hard use on a hot day can trigger a protective cut out. Let it cool.

• A loose connector under vibration. Intermittent power often points to a connection that breaks when the bike moves.
